Across the US there are 4.3 Google searches for rentals for every search for homes for sale, up from 4.1 three years ago. Renters have also changed how they search: 71% of rental searches are now "near me" queries, up from 52%.

Google reports rounded monthly search volumes, and very small volumes show as 10 or nothing, so small states and rare queries are noisy. Google may group close variants of a query. Search volume measures interest, not transactions. The planned comparison with Census rental vacancy rates is not included in this edition. "Apartments near me" includes some searches for apartment amenities and complexes rather than vacancies.
