Five portals hold 68% of page one for "homes for sale" in 201 US cities

We searched "homes for sale [city]" from inside 201 US cities. Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com, Redfin and Homes.com took 67.7% of the top 10 organic results. Zillow ranked on page one in 98% of cities. Independent brokers and agents got 13.6%, and in 50 cities they didn't appear at all.

Method

Top 10 organic results per city (ads, map packs and other features excluded). Each domain classified as a listing portal, agent directory, social site, national brokerage brand, or independent broker/agent/other by a fixed list of rules. Shares are of all page-one organic results.

Limits

One search per city on one day; rankings move daily and differ by device and searcher. "Independent" includes a small number of non-real-estate sites. The plan also called for traffic estimates per domain, which this edition doesn't include.

Key findings

01The five biggest portals took 67.7% of page-one organic results; all listing portals and MLS sites together took 72.1%.
02Portals held the #1 spot in 78.1% of cities.
03zillow.com (98% of cities), trulia.com (88% of cities), realtor.com (90% of cities), redfin.com (56% of cities) and homes.com (48% of cities) were the most widespread.
04National brokerage brands took 13.6%, led by exprealty.com, coldwellbanker.com and remax.com.
05Independent brokers and agents took 13.6% and were shut out of page one in 50 cities.
